Ordering the right amount of fabric is essential—we don’t want you purchasing too much fabric, and we certainly don’t want you coming up short. This yardage estimate guide is designed to help you determine how much upholstery fabric you may need for furniture, slipcovers, window treatments, and home décor projects.

Standard Upholstery Fabric Width

Most upholstery-weight fabrics sold in the United States are 54 inches wide. The yardage estimates provided are based on this standard width and include a reasonable allowance for pattern matching.

Some fabrics—especially stripe, plaid, or large-scale floral patterns— may require additional yardage due to pattern repeats.

Pattern Repeats & Extra Yardage

Yardage charts do not always account for additional elements such as armrest covers, self-lined skirts, or attached pillow backs. For this reason, we recommend purchasing an extra yard of fabric when ordering upholstery fabric by the yard.

If you are unsure which fabric type or pattern is best for your project, our Fabric Finder can help narrow your options by color, pattern, and material.

Slipcovers & Custom Upholstery Projects

When ordering fabric for slipcovers, it is important to measure your furniture precisely. Be sure to account for:

  • Seam allowances
  • Pattern matching
  • Armrests, cushions, and skirts
  • Potential fabric shrinkage

If your slipcover fabric will be washed, consider pre-washing the fabric before cutting to avoid shrinkage after installation. Many upholstery fabrics may shrink up to 5%.

Drapery, Window Treatments & Home Décor

When using upholstery fabric for window coverings or decorative panels, be sure to account for both the decorative fabric and a lining. Larger windows may require additional width, which can increase total yardage.

Bedding, Table Linens & Washable Projects

Bedding and table linens are frequently washed, making fabric shrinkage an important consideration. We recommend factoring in shrinkage before placing your order, especially for cotton blends or natural fibers.

Upholstery Fabric Yardage Chart

Use the chart below as a general guideline for estimating upholstery fabric yardage. All estimates are based on standard 54-inch wide fabric and assume average pattern repeats. Projects using large-scale patterns, stripes, or plaids may require additional yardage.

Furniture Piece Estimated Yardage
Dining Chair Seat 1 – 2 yards
Dining Chair (Seat & Back) 2 – 3 yards
Accent Chair 3 – 4 yards
Wingback Chair 5 – 7 yards
Loveseat 6 – 8 yards
Sofa (Standard) 12 – 14 yards
Sectional Sofa 16 – 20 yards
Ottoman 1 – 3 yards
Bench 2 – 3 yards
Chaise Lounge 6 – 8 yards

These estimates do not include additional yardage for matching large patterns, self-lined skirts, armrest covers, or attached pillow backs. When in doubt, we recommend ordering one extra yard of fabric.

To confirm color, texture, and weight before ordering yardage, consider ordering fabric samples.
